The Black Breastfeeding Blog was created by Jennifer James as a way to reach black mothers who are currently breastfeeding or who want to breastfeed in the future. As a former breastfeeding mother of two daughters (who she breastfed for two years each), Jennifer believes in the powerful healing properties of breast milk and believes all black moms should at least start the nursing process to increase the health of their babies.

1899: The beginning of infant formula

Check this out from 1899. Unbelievable! This is an advertisement for Lactated Food.

The page says: Birthday greetings from four Lactated Food babies. Their mothers say their lives were saved by lactated food.

And on the back of the advertisement, you can see endorsements from moms such as "but for Lactated Food, baby would have died."

The company, Wells & Richardson, Co." says it will keep "bottle-fed babies well and strong and prevent sickness." And "Every mother should know the Great Value of Lactated Food."

Read the other endorsements. Times really don't change that much, do they?

"It supplies that nourishment that is often wanting in mother's milk." That's the line that really gets me in this ad. I guess I always thought that the early formulas were created out of desperation to nourish those babies whose mothers absolutely couldn't nurse them. And that the idea of formula as superior to breastmilk was something that was promoted much later - post WWII when there was a big push towards all things scientific.

This one line in this ad, clearly refutes that. Obviously, from the beginning, formula was marketed to replace nursing. So, sad.

Isn't that something? I couldn't believe that this was an ad from 1899. Who knew?
