Breastfeeding and Art
Thursday, September 27, 2007
I am interrupting my Breastfeeding and Men series today because these artistic photographs of breastfeeding mothers are, quite frankly, amazing and I simply cannot wait until tomorrow to mention them.
Helen, a reader in England, sends me wonderful breastfeeding email. She's the one who told me about the beautiful painting of the African woman breastfeeding in Berlin a few months ago. Most recently she sent me a link to a London art exhibit called Through the Lens − 600 years of Breastfeeding. The artist, Laura Woolnough, photographed contemporary mothers and replicated famous mothers in art history. What a brilliant idea.
Here is mom, Cherry and her son, Mikel.

And here is the original Madonna and Child (about 1628-30) painted by Guido Reni (Italian, 1575-1642).

There are many more breastfeeding photographs to see over at the online gallery. They are all quite stunning.
And while you're following links, hop on over to The True Face of Birth to see another example of contemporary breastfeeding and breastfeeding in art history.

I can't believe there are no comments. I'm so struck by the photograph. I absolutely adore that version. It's gorgeous.
