The Black Breastfeeding Blog was created by Jennifer James as a way to reach black mothers who are currently breastfeeding or who want to breastfeed in the future. As a former breastfeeding mother of two daughters (who she breastfed for two years each), Jennifer believes in the powerful healing properties of breast milk and believes all black moms should at least start the nursing process to increase the health of their babies.

Breastfeeding at Home -- Then and Now

I contend that the formula industry not only changed the way we view breastfeeding in public, but also the way we view breastfeeding in our own homes. Let me hear your thoughts.

Here's another picture of this mother who is breastfeeding comfortably in the presence of two perfect strangers -- the rehabilitation supervisor and Arthur Rothstein, the photographer.

I think you're on the perfect path. It's striking to me that you keep finding these images that are not about nursing at all--that's how nursing used to be, like breathing, like walking, cause for no mention whatsoever.

There's no question in my mind that there is a link between the rise of formula feeding and the sexualization of the breast. I also wonder how much the re-feminization of the late 40s and early 50s impacted the way we culturally viewed nursing. You, however, are definitely onto something.

I do believe women feel like they should be discreet even in their homes. My mom was always telling me to cover up..and sometimes even doing it for me grrr. But I always told visitors that I was not going to try and be discreet in my own home. Get over it!
