I think you're on the perfect path. It's striking to me that you keep finding these images that are not about nursing at all--that's how nursing used to be, like breathing, like walking, cause for no mention whatsoever.
There's no question in my mind that there is a link between the rise of formula feeding and the sexualization of the breast. I also wonder how much the re-feminization of the late 40s and early 50s impacted the way we culturally viewed nursing. I do believe women feel like they should be discreet even in their homes. My mom was always telling me to cover up..and sometimes even doing it for me grrr. But I always told visitors that I was not going to try and be discreet in my own home. Get over it!
