The Black Breastfeeding Blog was created by Jennifer James as a way to reach black mothers who are currently breastfeeding or who want to breastfeed in the future. As a former breastfeeding mother of two daughters (who she breastfed for two years each), Jennifer believes in the powerful healing properties of breast milk and believes all black moms should at least start the nursing process to increase the health of their babies.

Yet Another Reason Why I Don't Read Cookie

There are tons of reasons why I don't read Cookie magazine like over-the-top materialism, not being appreciated as a black mom, and now their blog, First Feeding. Hear why.

Take a look at Cookie Magazine's blog, First Feeding:

Ugh. It reads like a segment from The Onion. If I didn't know it was "real" commentary, I'd be inclined to laugh at its backwardness and absurdity. Sadly, too many people will read it and think of it as "news." Bleh.

Interesting, Jennifer. I clicked on the link before listening to your commentary and I totally didn't notice the bottle. So I wasn't sure what you were specifically unhappy about. There was a rather crass comment about Sophie Currier in there, but I missed the bottle logo completely.

Meanwhile, I too had never seen Cookie before, until I happened to be at a hotel this weekend and the gym locker room had magazines. I read it while in the sauna and got a different impression. I was surprised that for a parenting magazine there were no formula ads (I look for these things when I read main-stream parenting magazines ;-) ). In addition there was one ad for the Boppy that is sold through Pottery Barn and it showed a woman nursing a baby with the Boppy and a *man* (presumably father) bottle feeding a baby. I have to say I was sort of impressed. It is definitely better than the garbage that Parents magazine puts out there, including flat-out endorsing of formula in some columns.

But I COMPLETELY agree with you about the demographic that they are after. And while I probably fit into that demographic (sort of), I resent their narrow focus and faux polished look. You know, the "perfect" white upper middle-classed family with a mom and dad and lots of spare cash to spend on all the crap they peddle through their "articles".

There was one article in particular in this issue that turned me off. It was a diatribe in defense of plastic toys. The author is annoyed that there is a bit of a comeback for wooden toys. That summed it up for me. The magazine is for a demographic of SUV-driving McMansion-inhabiting suburbanites who resent any effort to create sustainable lifestyles. But that wont stop Cookie from writing some lame article about "easy ways to go green" next month.

Sorry for the rant. Now that you point out the bottle in their blog logo, I see that they are just hypocrites.

It looks kind of like those Adiri bottles that are supposed to be more like breasts as if they were going for a breast/bottle hybrid.

Whatever they were going for, I don't like the magazine either. It is obscenely materialistic and I am no minimalist, but I feel like I should throw everything out after I flip through that magazine.

I decided to browse their whole web site today and I didn't find anything about breastfeeding at all. So, now I know why there is no outrage about the bottle among their readers. They do have articles, though, about all the new gear and products to BUY, BUY, BUY!

Eilat -- Guess what? On their homepage today they have an article called the Green Index.
