Be Pregnant and Fit
Tuesday, February 27, 2007
Two factors that doctors use to determine and assess the risk for pre-term births is body-mass index and maternal diabetes. If a mom does not have gestational diabetes or has a low, healthy body-mass index, the chance that her baby will be born prematurely is automatically lower than if a mother had a poor BMI and had diabetes. That is why it is so imperative that you exercise before, during and after pregnancy. It will help you to lose the pregnancy weight and will aid in the overall health of your baby.Exercise can be a lifesaver for any mom who may be feeling the stresses of pregnancy.
Jennifer Gianni's Fusion Pilates for Pregnancy is a perfect video to get you on your feet while you're expecting by raising your heart rate and sculpting your body all at the same time. The one thing it doesn't do is compromise your safety.

They've Got to Be Kidding: Pregnant Moms Should Now Eat Fish
Friday, February 16, 2007
Research is ever changing. I guess that's simply the nature of science. When I was pregnant six years ago, fish of all kinds was strictly prohibited. The mercury in the fish was supposed to harm the fetus. Now, the omega-3 fatty acids that we get from fish is just too important to pass up.
According to this new research, eating fish will help he baby's neurological development.
The writers questioned whether the government's overall advice to restrict consumption of specific fish that accumulate higher mercury concentrations is "in the public's best interest." A consumer survey suggested that many Americans presented with this advice reduced their intake of all fish, a reduction, which according to the Dr. Hibbeln's study, might result in more harm than good, they wrote.Despite this new research I suggest talking to your doctor about it and following their advice.
In this circumstance, in which fish contain both nutrients and toxins that are an essential part of many people's diet, people are probably best served, they said, "by advisories that follow science and that are conservative in the absence of compelling scientific evidence of harm."

Deep Relaxation for Childbirth
Thursday, February 15, 2007
Are you pregnant for the very first time? If yes, I want to say, "Congratulations!" Secondly, I want to let you know that no matter how scared or nervous you may be about giving birth, everything is going to be beautiful. Be sure to take time to really love yourself during this special time. If that means taking time off from work a month before your due date, I encourage you to do it. If that means taking family and friends-free weekends for yourself and your mate only, do it. This is your time! Don't be afraid to claim it.
For me, my husband was extremely supportive both times I was pregnant. I didn't have to work during either pregnancy, so I was able to take the time to really bond with my babies when they were in my womb. I had time for exercise, to eat right and for leading a relatively stress-free life. In turn, I had two beautiful pregnancies and two beautiful deliveries. I wish that for every pregnant mommy.
As you nurture your little one in your womb, here is a great CD, Deep Relaxation For Childbirth

Cash is ALWAYS Better Than Gifts
Tuesday, February 13, 2007
I don't know about you, but I've always been one who preferred cash to gifts. I suspect it's because I rarely get gifts that I really, really long for. So, getting cash allows me to buy those things I want for myself. If you're in your mid to late pregnancy and you're about to have your baby shower and you'd rather have cash, guess what? You can ask for it and not sound tacky. Here's how. Go to MyRegistry.com, the ultimate online gift registry and the leader in gift registry technology, and sign up for their new patent-pending Cash Gift Service.
MyRegistry.com solves the social etiquette of asking for cash gifts by creating a pre-set feature on each member's registry that can be activated by any member interested in using the free service. The service allows friends and family to send cash gifts easily with a credit card, a bank wire or a PayPal account.
"MyRegistry.com is all about creating the ultimate gift registry and helping people get what they really want and need on important occasions," says Founder and Chairman Oded Berkowitz. "Cash is a very big part of it and in many cases it is what people really want. It will help pay for their wedding, honeymoon, furniture, down-payment on a new home or anything else needed."

Black Women Have Three Times More Premature Births
Monday, February 12, 2007
A new study out of the Center for Preterm Birth Research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis reports black women give birth prematurely three times more often than their white counterparts. We've all known this for quite some time, but the principal researcher has added a little bit more insight into this phenomenon. Dr. Louis J. Muglia argues that these preterm births may not be a direct result of environmental factors, but instead may be a case of genetics at work. For more information about genetics and preterm deliveries in black women, read Black women face higher risk of premature birth.

Conceiving in Spring May Cause Premature Births
I just saw this article on the wires and thought I'd share. Two researchers have concluded that women who conceive during the spring have a higher risk of delivering prematurely. Several factors may be the cause such as spring allergens and viruses, sunlight exposure, and the amount of exercise women get during this time.

Belly Casting
Wednesday, February 7, 2007
Have you ever thought about making a lasting memory of your preggy belly? Well, maybe you should. Belly casting is a beautiful way to capture your pregnancy and then share it with your child as they grow older. Many women hold belly casting parties at their baby showers. It's a great way for you and your friends and family to celebrate this momentous occasion. We recommend buying your belly casting kit from Proud Belly. They're one of the oldest Internet companies in the business who specialize in making an expectant mom's pregnancy enjoyable and artful.

By the way, FYI, I wanted to mention that belly casting is nothing new. In fact, belly casts originate from Africa -- the motherland. If you don't believe me, check out African Style
Another unique piece is this body cast from Kenya, worn during ceremonies by men when their wives are pregnant. While the specific ritual meaning is varied, some say it is worn to show support for the women.

Pregnancy Health
Tuesday, February 6, 2007
Black women continue to give birth to low birth weight babies and black babies continue to have the highest infant mortality rates than any other race in America. That said, it's extremely imperative that you get as much prenatal attention as possible, not only for your health but also for the health of your baby.In addition to attending regular pre-natal visits, you can always do supplemental reading about your pregnancy. We recommend womens-health.gov's prenatal information. Not only do they have essential information on their site, you can also call them toll-free to speak to a real person. Click here for additional information about having a healthy pregnancy.
