Share Your Ultrasound Photos and Videos Straight From the Doctor's Office
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
Did you know that you can share your baby's first ultrasound photo and video with friends and family straight from the doctor's office? I didn't either until I read about PhotOBaby.PhotOBaby is only available in select doctor's offices and allows parents to customize their baby's ultrasound picture with images, content, their name, sex, date of the ultrasound, border art, and music. Plus, specialized content allows parents to humanize their baby's face. By offering PhotOBaby in clinical settings, parents are encouraged to go to licensed professionals to get their ultrasounds completed.

Babies Like Good People
Monday, November 26, 2007
A very interesting study out of Yale and published in the journal Nature on November 22, 2007 says babies as young as six-months-old prefer good samaritans over mean people.In a first-ever study, researchers showed babies scenes where a character was helped up a hill by a friendly character (helper) and then these babies were showed the same character being forced down a hill by a meaner character (hinderer). When the babies (ages six months and ten months) were asked to choose which object they wanted, 14 of the 16 10-month-olds chose the helper character and all 12 of the six-month-olds chose the helper character.
"This supports the view that our ability to evaluate people is a biological adaptation--universal and unlearned," said the authors of the study.
You can take a look at brief videos of the studies and the children picking the helper objects on the Yale web site. This gives us much more insight into our babies' little, bitty brains. They are certainly processing more than we give them credit for.

Innovative New Thermometer: Take Baby's Temp on Their Forehead
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
I'm glad my babies didn't get sick often. And when they did I just let the cold run its course and never used a thermometer until they were old enough to hold it under their tongue themselves. I'm not a very big fan of taking anyone's temperature (even my own children's) rectally. And, I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way judging by one of the most innovative thermometers I've personally ever seen, the TemporalScanner™ from Exergen.The Exergen TemporalScanner gauges body temperature in two seconds by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart via the carotid artery. Who knew?
“Research proves that this is amongst the most accurate way to test for fever in all ages and it is clearly the least invasive,” says Exergen President Francesco Pompei, Ph.D., who developed and patented the technology. “We are proud to have developed it and stand behind each one we sell.”The Exergen TemporalScanner infrared thermometer has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $49.99. It is available at Wal-Mart, Target, Costco and leading pharmacies nationwide.

Looming American Infant Mortality
As much as the United States claims to be the leader of the world in technology, business, medicine, intellectualism, politics and sheer might you would think we could fix our perpetually embarrassing infant mortality problem.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States tallies about six deaths for every 1000 live births before their first year. Among industrialized countries, the United States is only ahead of Latvia, but tied with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia. Continued research points to race and income gaps in health care which is undoubtedly telling about how our nation cares for its most vulnerable citizens. In fact, black babies are twice as likely to die in infancy than their white and Hispanic counterparts.
Health Reminder
Be sure to take your baby to the scheduled well baby check-ups. A pediatrician should see your baby at these times:
* Within the first month
* Two months old
* Four months old
* Six months old
* Nine or fifteen months old
* 12 months old

Organic Milk Reduces Eczema, Allergy Risk
Friday, November 09, 2007
Many of us have heard about the benefits of eating organic fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Not only do they carry far fewer pesticides than conventional produce, dairy products, in particular, are free of dangerous hormones and steroids. Now there is even more reason to buy organic milk.New research claims mothers who drink organic milk during pregnancy and while breastfeeding help reduce the chances that their babies will develop eczema, asthma and allergies. Researchers of this study say, "the consumption of organic dairy products, within the context of an organic diet, is associated with the ... reduced incidence of eczema".

Autism Screening By Age Two
Tuesday, November 06, 2007
No matter how you look at it autism rates are going through the roof. Whether these increasing numbers are due to more diagnoses or can be linked to adverse reactions to vaccines, more and more children are now autistic. Unfortunately the numbers are so large and growing every year that the American Academy of Pediatrics is now urging all children be screened for autism by the age of 2.If you notice subtle signs that your toddler may have autism it would be in their best interest to have them screened now, so a support system can be set in place and therapy can start immediately.

Natural Toys for the Holidays
Friday, November 02, 2007
Undoubtedly you have many concerns about buying toys for your babies and toddlers this holiday season. With all of the recent toy recalls there is an understandable cause for concern about toy buying. There are several natural toy manufacturers and companies that have stressed the importance of natural toys for ages, instead of buying the imported, plastic toys that were massively recalled and disposed of because of possible lead contaminates.
Here are a few natural toy stores we recommend:
