Work & Business

T

he holidays are here, so many of us are thinking more than usual about what we have to be grateful for -- friends, family, health, housing, etc.

Winding up a long year with many changes -- a new house, new city and new business challenges, to name a few -- my thanks extend to things cerebral this year. What in particular?

Fear -- as in conquering it so that I can embrace success. How? Read on.

Courage: To embrace success, sometimes you simply have to have the courage to pursue your dreams. One of the things I love about getting older is that courage seems to be closer to the surface than when I was younger.

Sure, I still get frightened. But, all the mistakes I've made in the past give me the courage to forge ahead, confident in the knowledge that somehow I will land on my feet -- because that is who I am. My past tells me so.

Courage. Do you have it? If not, foster it. I'm finding it to be one of the best things to get through the tough times common to all small business owners.

Conviction: If you have courage, conviction is not far behind because they are two sides of the same coin.

The conviction that "this will work" is what will make you put in 26 hours a day when there are only 24 to be had; max out your credit cards when no bank will give you a loan; and not take a salary for 3 years because you know it will pay off in 5.

Is your dream backed by conviction? If not, make it so.

Perseverance: Sometimes, success comes simply because you are the last one standing -- you persevere longer than the other guy. Kinda like a dance-a-thon.

In a society ruled by immediacy -- eg, e-mail, cell phones, text messaging -- is it any wonder that we are pre-conditioned for "quick success"?

BUT, this is an oxymoron. There is nothing quick about success. It's an age old message, but anything worth having must be worked for. So, when the going gets tough, think of it as paying your dues. And, when success finally comes, you'll remember the struggles and appreciate it all the more.

During this season of thanks, my wish for you is that courage, conviction and perseverance will always be a part of your entrepreneurial dreams.
