M
otherhood(R) Maternity surveyed their maternity customers to
find out what was really on their mind. In a survey conducted
through their website, http://www.motherhood.com, more than
1,000 pregnant women responded and they had a lot to say!

Faced with the biggest life-changing event they will probably ever
experience, these women wanted to talk about their biggest secret fears:

42% said their biggest secret fear was that their new baby would have a
birth defect of some type.  27% feared:  "I will gain weight and not be able
to lose after the baby is born."  And 18% said their biggest secret fear was
that labor and delivery would be painful.  Other secret fears?  "Everyone will
hate me by the time all this morning sickness is over," "My husband will be
in Iraq when our baby is born," and "I will never look as good or as sexy
after giving birth."  Here's the good news: out of a list of six possible
choices, only 3% reported their biggest secret fear was that their husband
would be unfaithful while they were pregnant.

So how do pregnant women view sex?

62% of the respondents reported that they had sex with their husbands in
the prior week, while 32% said they had not. One woman wrote in, "Sex?  What
is that?" while another said, "Sex is better now than ever."

Food cravings are supposed to come with the territory of pregnant women,
but 60% of our survey respondents reported that they had none (although one
woman reported:  "In one sitting I ate 5 pickles!  Didn't feel so good after,
but man was it tasty!"). Whether or not they crave any one food, they are
worrying about weight gain. Only 0.5% gained over 50 pounds in their
pregnancy. And one woman wrote: "I have actually lost 10 pounds so far.  I'm
12 weeks."

General comments ranged from, "I generally feel pretty darn good!" and,
"I've never felt more beautiful than I do now." to "I have been really
uncomfortable with this pregnancy and can't wait 'till it is over.  I am
trapped in this pregnant body."

Perhaps the survey is summed up best by the following new mom's comment:
"There's a lot they don't tell you about being pregnant."
"Amen," commented Rebecca Matthias, Motherhood Maternity President.
