f you have a
daughter no doubt from
time
to time she has seriously entertained the notion of becoming a princess. But, as a mom
what do you do when the princess she wants to become doesn't look anything like
her? Now, there's Princess Briana, a wonderful story of an African
princess, who after being invited to a school for princesses in Spain, learns to
appreciate her unique beauty even though she doubted she was even beautiful at
all.
Princess Briana , a
72 page, hardcover, full color illustrated children's book, is a wonderful
addition to any young girl's library. With lessons of self-respect, self-love,
and having pride in one's own beauty, Princess Briana helps young black
girls identify with
a princess of color who has to learn to love herself
-- much in the same way black girls have to learn to truly love their hair and
their skin and eye color.
Ultimately with the help of an African queen,
Princess Briana does learn to see the beauty in her own hair, skin and eye color
and size. So much so, she wins the annual princess pageant with flying colors
because she displays not only that she is beautiful and talented, but most of
all intelligent.
One of the most powerful aspects of the book is
no prince was written into the story. Most traditional princess stories are
written with a prince coming to rescue the princess and the two of them living
happily ever after. "Most people don't realize there is no prince in the story",
said Yaba Baker, Princess Briana author and founder of
Just Like Me Books. It's
refreshing that no prince has to rescue Princess Briana at all. Despite a gentle
nudging from the queen, the moving lesson is Princess Briana learns to fully
love herself by herself.
Princess Briana has been selling out in book
