Edmonds is doing big business while holding down
the two most important roles in her life: Wife and mother. As the owner and CEO
of Edmonds Entertainment Group, Edmonds has single-handedly brought about the
success of such media phenomena as Soul Food and College Hill. Currently she has
a slate of feature film projects set up at Disney, Fox Searchlight, MGM and
Universal.
Tonisha
Johnson: You’re a wife, mother and businesswoman.
How do you incorporate all of that?
Tracey Edmonds: It’s really, really hard and I
don’t really have a formula for it. You’re a mom, a wife a career woman. You
just do the best that you can to kind of fit everything into the day.
You know the number one
priority as a mother is your kids. And your husband’s important and then your
career, but I think one of the things that you discover, at least I discovered,
is it seems like I’m running late for everything. It’s seems like there’s not
enough hours in the day to balance everything so its kind of like running all
over the place and taking meetings, talking to teachers, making sure homework
gets done; trying to just like juggle it all. My weekdays are just really,
really hectic. And a lot of times when the weekend hits I’m just like wanting to
chill and relax with my kids and just kind of unwind because things are at such
a fast pace during the week.
What is your
biggest challenge?
I think the one thing that is
the hardest is finding that personal quiet time. That’s pretty challenging for
me. For me, my three-year-old is still pretty little and so there are days where
you just want to have a nap on the weekends and just read a book by yourself.
It’s kind of hard because
usually there are little ones running in and out of the room. They’re hungry or
thirsty or they want to watch a movie with you. They want you to read with them
or they want to play a game.
My son’s
favorite DVD is Charlie Brown.
Oh, we like Charlie Brown, too.
We love the Christmas one and the Halloween one.
We taped the Christmas one from TV. It’s
almost the same as the DVD, except I still have Christmas commercials and
countdowns playing over and over.
(Laughing). I’m sure you do.
Cause you get used to watching things over and over.
He is going on three but he knows it word
for word.
It’s fun to watch their eyes
light up. They could have watched it a million times, but they light up like
it’s the first time.
What is next for Edmonds Entertainment?
We have about four or five
other things at different networks. The way that this industry works is that you
sell something, it takes awhile to develop, it takes awhile to get a script
approved and then get a pilot ordered. So we’re just kind of waiting to hear
from some of the networks about the things that are in development. And the same
thing with feature films -- we have a comedy that we’re getting pretty close
with over at Disney, a comedy at MGM, but still kind of playing that waiting
game and waiting for the final draft. So, it’s really early to say anything.
Hopefully by the middle of the year, we’ll look to make some announcements on
things that hopefully we’re going to production on.
