What's New in Kids and Teens (January 16-22, 2008)
Ad-Free Educational Games for KidsPBS now offers an ad-free, Internet-based educational platform for children between the ages of 3 -6 to help them learn computer basics as well as math, reading, science, social studies, creativity and literacy. Called PBS Kids Play! (SM), young children can now engage in online activities and play games that were all designed to foster educational advancement with some of their favorite PBS characters like Curious George, Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies and The Berenstein Bears. And PBS has conveniently created this platform without the use of advertisements that parents are increasingly becoming wary of.
Currently only in beta testing, parents can download PBS Kids Play! (SM) for free. When PBS Kids Play official launches later this year, it will cost $9.95 per month of $79.95 annually.

Children and Adolescents: Seven Tips for a Healthy Heart
Most of us automatically assume heart disease is a health concern relegated to adults. But as obesity rates increase in the United States, heart disease is also becoming a growing concern for children and teens.
"Despite recent progress, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and disability for both men and women in the United States," said Dr. Gre
gg C. Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science, professor of cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and director of the Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center. "However, heart disease can be almost entirely prevented with a healthy lifestyle and excellent control of cardiovascular risk factors."
2. Make a point of getting outside and moving around for at least 30 minutes every day.
3. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
4. Avoid fast food and fried food, and eat in moderation.
5. Don't smoke.
6. See your pediatrician for all regularly scheduled visits.
7. Report unusual feelings, such as a racing heart or feeling faint, to an adult.

What's New in Kids and Teens (January 1-7, 2008)
Calling All Dora the Explorer FansDo you have a little Dora fan on your hands? If you do, you'll be happy to know there's a brand new Dora DVD hitting shelves on January 15, 2008: "Dora the Explorer: Undercover Dora".
This DVD is packed with everything you and your child have come to love from Dora -- interactivity, imaginative adventures, and a bilingual element perfect for preschoolers.
In Part One, "Super Spies", Dora and Boots become sleuths to prevent Swiper from nabbing Isa's cupcakes and Tico's birthday presents. "Dora the Explorer: Dora Undercover" also features two new-to-DVD episodes from Dora the Explorer, including "Rojo, the Red Fire Truck" and "Pinto, the Pony Express". Plus, the DVD includes "Say It Two Ways with Dora", a bonus featurette which helps children learn basic Spanish vocabulary.

The length of this DVD is 98 minutes making it really worth the cost of $16.99. We hate buying DVDs that cost an arm and a leg and our kids are finished watching them before we can get a load of laundry in the wash.

Underdog Charm
On the next rainy Saturday afternoon when your kids have nothing better to do besides bug you about when are you going to fix lunch, make sure you have some family entertainment readily on standby.
For those of you who are at least in your thirties, you probably watched "Underdog" cartoons as a kid. These days children can get all the "Underdog" action they'll ever need in a full-length Disney movie.
We have to say although "Underdog" has all the trappings of a trite kids' movie, there were elements we thought gave the movie character and charm like an adorable talking beagle and a zany plot children will enjoy.

While your children probably won't be clamoring to watch "Underdog" day after day, it is worth adding to your DVD library because all kids eventually tire of watching "The Incredibles" and "Shark Tale".

Facing the Day Refreshed
Applying to college. Picking the right friends. Saying "no" to drugs. Waking up on time. Teens face a lot of challenges and waking up feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to go looms large on their list of daily priorities.
Clean and Clear is a line of morning facial cleansers and moisturizers designed to give teens an extra boost in the mornings. The unique formula is infused with "Bursting Beads" that awaken skin and gives it a refreshed sheen with less shine. Lemongrass and fruit extracts are also added to awaken your teen's senses each morning and vitamin C gently dissolves tired skin. Your teen will love it and their face will thank them.

Although the Clean and Clear line is formulated for teens, we loved it when we tried it. We think it's great to help mommies face the day energized, too!

Karito Kids: Lulu
Your daughter will love receiving Lulu Rehema Kibwana for Christmas or Kwanzaa, her birthday or any other time of the year for that matter. Karito Kids, a company that specializes in multicultural dolls, offers a full line of ethnic dolls from Pita who hails from Mexico to Wan Ling who calls China home. We love Lulu, a Kenyan 11-year-old, who is very intelligent, co-hosts her own TV show, and even finds time to play football (soccer). We believe Lulu is a great role model and doll for black girls unlike a lot of the popular, but wildly mature dolls that seem to get everyone's attention these days.
Lulu is a beautifully crafted doll with a soft belly and plastic arms, head and legs. Her facial features are decidedly Afrocentric and her hair is kinky and curly, which helps young black girls love themselves and tremendously boosts their self-esteem. When your daughter plays with Lulu she'll see herself in her and that is vitally important for young girls who are forming their own perceptions of who they are.
Although we have already mentioned how beautiful the Lulu doll is, we also love that all of Lulu's clothes are fully removable, revealing tasteful undergarments underneath. Karito Kids also provides various outfits
you can purchase separately so your daughter can mix and match her outfits, something young girls who are into fashion love to do.We also appreciate that each doll is accompanied by her very own novel which helps foster advanced literacy and an appreciation for reading. In fact, Lulu's novel take girls on an adventure to Nairobi, Kenya which will help your daughter gain a deeper geographic knowledge.
Not only are the Karito Kids dolls a delight to play with, Karito Kids understands that play can also easily move into the realm of education and reading. Lulu retails for $99.99.
